Finding a greater purpose, or miss...Wonderful post! Finding a greater purpose, or mission, in even mundane tasks is a neat shift in thinking, one I'll keep in mind both in teaching and in life. I'll have to keep my mission(s) and purpose posted on my wall or something as a reminder for days when I feel rather existential/depressed, haha, as I approach 2021 with hope and commitment that things can look up again. :) And yes, you're completely right in that nowadays, the common approach to work-life balance isn't the same as in previous years. I'm trying to figure out what could be a sustainable approach in terms of life and work to accomplish my ideas and goals in an orchestra program without burning out or feeling like I'm 'missing out on life' as a young adult.

I'll be reevaluating how I spend my time and whether it reflects my mission as a person and musician overall, as a catalyst to change my habits. Same here, in that writing a comment/response is helping me think through what momentum I want to continue into 2021 and what things are best left behind in 2020, as I work on identifying my missions in life this upcoming year. Thanks again for your post, and have a wonderful New Year! :) Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02106878452169787417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7991963427960730757.post-39135697639869890962020-11-18T10:00:58.485-08:002020-11-18T10:00:58.485-08:00Thank you for this!Thank you for this!Dallas Bloggerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11100320711006441146noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7991963427960730757.post-34686567873040862122020-10-29T08:13:16.935-07:002020-10-29T08:13:16.935-07:00Thank you!Thank you!OrchestraGuyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05973366422165647272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7991963427960730757.post-29540497328576761752020-10-29T08:12:57.680-07:002020-10-29T08:12:57.680-07:00Thank you!! I am using the term "syllabus" in a broader sense here, to indicate all of the values that w bring to the class.
Here is a link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pBwtlNJZTyOvf58J_2kTWkRBdpXkee9ae4krB5ZeLF0/edit?usp=sharingOrchestraGuyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05973366422165647272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7991963427960730757.post-578900466912459412020-09-10T12:17:17.481-07:002020-09-10T12:17:17.481-07:00"What if you have students who opted to learn..."What if you have students who opted to learn ensemble music well before the pandemic, do you still honor the ensemble selections?"
Absolutely. I provide tons of student choice. If students want to move on to small ensembles or even "self-ensembles" using violin trio books or something like that, I will help to facilitate. I am also concerned that some students may be comfortable with the less challenging repertoire in this environment and want to move to small ensemble or technique work as the rep gets more challenging. This is fine with me!!

"About how much time do you spend recording and editing?"
I am not going to lie. It can be time consuming, but satisfying. I would estimate that on my first go-round, it took about 4 to 6 hours to edit the piece. I will add a link to the body of the blog with that final product. I also give the kids instructions on how to do the recording themselves. This really empowers them and most do a great job with it. Remember - I teach high school.

What type of setup and/or software do you use? Please see the Audio Guides post (linked in this post. It is the previous one on the blog.) I would like to do this but don’t really know where to start. When you start bringing in artists to work with or talk to your kids, I recommend Karen Strittmatter Galvin from the NC Symphony. She’s an amazing teacher, artist, and human being. I’m sure she’d love to work with your kids if she hasn’t already. Such as, what if you have students who opted to learn ensemble music well before the pandemic, do you still honor the ensemble selections? I'm asking because I am also having students learn solos and ensembles, but I really want all of them to experience both sides. About how much time do you spend recording and editing? What type of setup and/or software do you use? This is my first time to your blog, so maybe there a more information about this in past posts.
